Hi. I'm Paula Johnson and I create fairy tale & fantasy figures in mixed media (mainly cloth), in short I make dolls. You can blame Chandra Cerchione-Peltier for my joining IA, she's the one that mentioned in a blog and encouraged me to come on over. (Thanks Chandra, I do love it here already.)
I am also mother to three children, 2 girls and a boy, two of which are teens... sigh... Have been married for 18 years and I started designing on my own about 11 years ago. I'm striving to add more detail to my dolls and I feel that I'd like to start doing mini "scenes".... like someone has captured a scene of a play in a photo.... except my "photo" will be in 3-D... well, that's that. It's nice to read about you all here. Oh see my dolls at my website here: www.paulasdollhouse.net/Doll_Shoppe.html |

Hi, great to come across this website. I identify with the concept of interstitial arts, though I also write purer genre and literary stuff.
Like at least one other person on this board, I live in Scotland. Interests - as well as mythic and fairy tale stuff, I love magic realism (Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship is one of my favourite short stories). Some of Luisa Valenzuela's short stories appeal too. The Glasgow Style Artists - especially the Macdonald sisters - are another interest. There was an otherworldly aspect to their work, which at the time counted against them in the eyes of male critics. I had a story published last year about Frances Macdonald, called Truth Lies at the Bottom of The Well (the title of one of Frances Macdonald's late watercolours). She and her husband have been somewhat overshadowed by the fame of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and his wife Margaret Macdonald, however there was an exhibition recently at the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow, Doves and Dreams, which focused on Frances Macdonald and James Herbert McNair. The exhibition is finished in Glasgow, but it will reopen in Liverpool, England, next year. The accompanying book, also called Doves and Dreams, has many illustrations of watercolours, bookplates, furniture designs, etc. Hol (who posted somewhere above) is right about interstitiality being about other things too - like gender, sexuality etc. It's about life. |

Kara, we are delighted to have you here! Do please feel free to jump into any of the discussions currently up, or to start one on your own. I was in Glasgow last year, and saw much of Margaret Macdonald, but don't really know about Frances. Where might one find your story?

What an august group! I almost hate to clutter it up with my presence!
Almost... I'm Mikal Trimm, a writer of short stories and poetry. I have the immense pleasure of being in the forthcoming Interfictions anthology, and also to have been greeted at the last WFC by Delia Sherman with what I can only describe as -- well, impressive warmth. My stories have been around the worldly block, and quite a few of them wind up in places that tend to have slippery ideas of what constitues genre fiction -- SAY..., Flytrap, Polyphony, Postscripts -- you know the culprits. I can only assume this is a good thing...especially when I see some of the folks who participate in the same sort of activity. Nice to be here. |

Clutter? Hardly! Having a story in Interfictions makes you a hero, as far as I'm concerned. I join Barrie in being very glad you've decided to join us here, and look forward to more talk (and stories!)....

Re: Introductions - 3 | ||

Hi,
Joy Marchand, here. I wanted to stop by and express my appreciation for the buzz being generated for Interfictions and to introduce myself as one of the contributors. I'm honored to be a part of this and am looking forward to seeing this book in print. As soon as I get my postcards, I'll be leaving them all over Cambridge and the North Shore of Massachusetts, trying to spread the word. I (and my stories) suffer from chronic "don't fit"-itis, and finding markets that will take a risk on unclassifiable work is a challenge that occasionally gets the best of me. I'm thrilled that you all have formed the IAF and are doing so much work to promote work from artists who "slip between the cracks." There are all kind of labels out there already like slipstream and magical realism, cross-genre, new wave fab, bizarro, and etc. but nothing does it better for me than "interstitial." *waving hand vaguely* "It's between this and that, sort of. Settled? Good, now must get back to writing ..." So, thanks, all. I hope we make a splash, and have a great time doing it. Joy |

Greetings, All
I am a multi-discipline artist who's ALL ABOUT breaking down boundaries and merging genres. My main focus is theatrical, sound design and composition, although I also write and direct for the stage. I only came into theater about 3 years ago, having a strong background in visual arts, music composition and recording. I also write poetry, lyrics, and short stories and have a story published here. I've haunted this place for a day now, many wonderful people here, seems to be quite a lovely and supportive community. I look forward to more! Cheers, Anna |

Joy, thank you so much for all your words!
We're updating the new Interfictions blog as often as we can; please drop by and comment when you feel so moved. In the face of the opposition that's heating up as we get ready to publish (What is this stuff anyhow? Can't they define themselves more rigorously??) it's really heartening to have artists stepping forward and saying that IAF has meaning - and use - for them! |

Hi everyone!
I write fiction that hovers between the fantasy and historical genres (and occasionally romance). You can see samples on my website, at: www.stephanieburgis.com/s...tories.php This looks like a great board! I'm looking forward to joining in. |

Hey Stephanie, welcome to the boards!
I wonder if you remember meeting at Worldcon in Glasgow a couple years ago? Glad to "see" you again? |

My name is Anne Harris. I'm a writer of sf, fantasy, and young adult novels. And recently, I've been writing manga and graphic novel scripts. I am very excited about these and was bummed to miss the Interfictions Comics events held recently in NY. Also, I am interested in gay male romance. I explore a bunch of this stuff on my blog over at: anneharris.typepad.com.
I am looking for an artist to collaborate with on a graphic novel project for Iris Print. If you are an artist interested in drawing a gay male period romance comic for a solid, pro-artist publisher, let me know! I'm pleased to be here (took me long enough!), and looking forward to meeting folks and touching base with those of you I already know, and engaging in some good discussions. |
