Hi Everyone,

I'm a violinist who gradually began turning to visual art and writing. As a child, I was obsessed with the fairy tales of Anderson and Brothers Grimm. About 2 years ago I began combining my art, writing and these same fairy tales into an "art as therapy" project and began to make some sense out of my abusive upbringing. The first time I learned about the combination of myth and contemporary arts was about 9 months into my project when a friend told me about the Endicott Studio.

I recently completed a web site hoping my experience might be of help to others. I've been calling it a chronicled account of interlaced art/writing/fairy tales techniques, but I think "interstitial art" is a much better description! My site is:

Thank you so much for the warm welcome. I am SO grateful to have found all of you here at IA and at the Endicott Studio-- a community where connections between women, fairy tales/myth, contemporary arts, and child abuse is explored is like a miracle to me. You were so kind to say you might look at my site. Im writing back to you in a jumbled state of jet lag, amazement and a bit of concern by something that happened today.

As I mentioned in my first post, the first time I saw the Endicott website I was in the middle of my own therapy through art and fairy tales project. When I read Terri Windlings bio and artist pages, I was absolutely ecstatic to find someone who related to fairy tales the way I did. I completed my project last May, put up the site about my experience, and I planned to post a link over on the Endicott bulletin board. I also wanted to send a thank you to Terri because I know articles I read on the web site such as the interview with Henry Macdonald, the Segur tribute and what I think was Transformations were what led me to finally ask myself what my childhood fascination with certain fairy tales (especially The Wild Swans) was about. I found the boards were being closed, so I sent off an e-mail for Terri to the Endicott Studio site, but got an automated response saying she was out of town until July 18th. Im not sure if this means the e-mail wasnt delivered, so knowing Im able to reach you here Im posting my concern here.

I was in Montreal from July 20 until yesterday, when I returned home to CA. Today I went to my P.O. Box hoping the book The Armless Maiden I ordered on July 16th had arrived. It had. I was so anxious to read about more about Terri Windlings experience, the first thing I did was sit down outside of the post office, open the book and turn to Surviving Childhood. Terri tells her incredible story interspersed with fairy tale quotes from The Seven Swans. Though they are from a different versionThe Wild SwansI included the same very same quotes in the final story of my own project. I was astounded when I saw this. I felt such a strong connection to Terris art and essays from the beginning, and to my more rational side, these parallels tell me that there is a connection between all of us that is yet to be understood and that is far greater than the word coincidence, but part of me is in turmoil tonight because I would be absolutely mortified if it seems to anyone (especially Terri), that I copied the same quotes, the method of interspersed fairy tale quotes or any of Terris ideas. Please know I would never ever do such a thing.

This whole amazing field of myth and art is very new to me. Ive yet to read any of the recommended books, and Im embarrassed to say Ive not yet heard any of your radio broadcasts, but now having finished my own project, Im so looking forward to doing all of this and learning more about fairy tales and contemporary arts and the whole field of Interstitial art. The final story of my site happened to me exactly as I wrote it and quoting the passages Id read a hundred times as a child as they bounced back to me with the memories seemed the perfect way to explain my own experience.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I read more from "The Armless Maiden," saw other similar approaches to storytelling, and felt much better. Incredible book!

I followed a link to your web site today, and so love your bone assemblage galleries! I'd love to hear more about your connection to the tale of Rapunzel sometime, too.
